PhD Student - Biochemical Process Engineering

JOB DESCRIPTION

PhD student in Biochemical Process Engineering with specialization in development of microbial cell factories for the production of biobased chemicals and fuels.

The research group Biochemical Process Engineering of the Department of Civil Environmental and Natural Resources at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) has a long experience on developing integrated processes that combine biotechnology and chemistry to produce foods, chemicals, medicines and fuels.

Subject description:

Biochemical Process Engineering focuses on the development of biochemical processes for the production and refinement of chemicals, fuels and material from biomass.

Duties:

We are now looking for a PhD student who is interested to develop new biobased processes covering the whole value chain from pre-treatment, fractionation, enzymatic hydrolysis, microbial conversion for the production of high added value chemicals and biofuels from lignocellulosic materials.

As a PhD student, you will be involved in teaching in the Sustainable Process Engineering program. Main work will be conducted at LTU in Luleå.

PhD students will be employed on a “Doktorandtjänst” for 4 to maximum 5 years (if teaching or other departmental work is included in the position). Local guidelines for salary exist.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Eligible candidates must have a bachelor or master degree of Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering. To be eligible for the position you must be admitted for post graduate studies. Regulations can be found in The Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen) 5 chapter §§ 1-7.

Experience in microbial fermentation technology and/or molecular biology techniques will be considered advantageous. You should be a good team player and have the ability to take initiative. You should also be very good at expressing yourself in written and spoken English and/or Swedish.
