Postdoctoral position in computational biology

Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, KTH Datavetenskap och kommunikation

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Swedens technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 13,400 first and second level students and almost 1,900 doctoral students. KTH has 4,900 employees.

Job description

KTH Computer Science and Communication (CSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in computational biology.

The department of Computational biology consists of 7 professors, 1 associate professor, 5 postdocs and about 25 PhD students. Three of the professors are located at SciLifeLab where also this position will be located. Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) is a national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a national resource and a collaboration between four universities: Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University.

The Project is concerned with Machine Learning and probabilistic modeling applied to cancer, in particular somatic evolution in cancer and cancer heterogeneity. Methodologically, this project will be focused on advanced methods for computational inference such as Expectation Maximization, Sequential Markov Chain, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), and Particle MCMC methods, as well as implementation of such methods on modern high performance computers and clusters. We expect to collaborate with Swedish groups developing new experimental methods and data at SciLifeLab as well as with international collaborators, e.g., Shah Lab for Computational Cancer Biology at the British Colombia Cancer Research Center.

Qualifications

A suitable background for this position would be a PhD in Engineering physics, Technical biology, Computer science or similar with qualifications in machine learning and algorithms. An interest in biology is a merit. The applicant must have a high proficiency in spoken and written English. Applicants must be strongly motivated for postdoctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis and also possess good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.
