PhD Studentship in Laser Sintering of Polymer Nanocomposites

University of Nottingham - Manufacturing & Process Technologies Division

Faculty of Engineering.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship (3 years) to work as part of the Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing Research Group (3DPRG) at the University of Nottingham. Located within the Faculty of Engineering, the 3DPRG is widely regarded as the world's leading Centre for Additive Manufacturing research, development and dissemination.

The project will be looking at the design of novel polymer nanocomposite particles and their processing by laser sintering, a particle based Additive Manufacturing technique. The selected candidate will fabricate the nanocomposite particles, following which they will carry out laser sintering trials in order to optimise processing parameters and determine the processing window for the designed materials. Fabricated parts will be characterised in order to gain an understanding of material-processing-property relationships. The focus of the project will be on added functionality (e.g. magnetic, biological properties) in addition to improving mechanical properties and processability.

The studentship will cover PhD tuition fees (at the UK/EU rates) and provide a tax free stipend for three years (£13,863 for the 2014-15 academic year). An additional £2000 a year may be awarded for students with a 1st class degree / MSc Distinction from a UK Russell Group University or equivalent.

Students must have a first or upper second class academic qualification in Materials, Chemistry, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or a related subject. A Masters degree in a similar discipline and/or experience in Polymer Nanocomposites or Additive Manufacturing will be an advantage.
