EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Graphene Technology

Up to 14 fully funded 4-year studentships available for October 2015 start

Department/Location: Cambridge Graphene Centre, 9 JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, UK
Course code: EGEGR4
Closing date: 21 December 2014

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Graphene Technology, located in the Cambridge Graphene Centre (www.graphene.cam.ac.uk) at the University of Cambridge invites applications for up to 14 fully-funded and full-time 4-year PhD studentships starting in October 2015.

The Centre's research and training activities focus on Cambridge's internationally recognised strength in graphene, carbon allotropes, layered crystals and hybrid nanomaterials. The centre has a strong collaboration with industrial and academic partners across various disciplines (Engineering, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology) which will help shape and develop the Centre's vision and mission activities.

The structure of the programme is a one-year MRes followed by a 3-year PhD. The first year will form the scientific and technical expertise of the students in science and technology of graphene and related materials, ranging from basic physics, chemistry and nanotechnology to applications in the areas of electronics, photonics, communications, energy, bio-medicine and composites. This will be done by a combination of taught modules, workshops and short projects. Coupled with these, business and entrepreneurship skills, public outreach and tailored professional development will significantly extend the training. The students will have a clear view of various research areas and be equipped with the necessary skills and experimental techniques on Science and Technology of graphene, related layered materials and hybrid systems based on the combination of different two-dimensional crystals or of two-dimensional crystals and other (nano)materials, before selecting their PhDs at the end of the year, enabling them to use their next 3 years efficiently, rapidly achieving high impact and independence.

Full EPSRC funding is available for UK students and European students who have studied in the UK for 3 years. Applicants are expected to have a 2.1 or 1st class degree from a UK University or an equivalent standard from an overseas university. Non-EU applicants can still join the programme if recipient of external scholarships (such as CSC, Gates, Commonwealth or other scholarships) covering the full costs. A small number of funded places are also available to EU students not currently resident in the UK.

The first round of applications will close on the 21st of December 2014. Potential applicants must complete the on-line application form accessible through the Centre website (http://www.doctoral.graphene.cam.ac.uk). The first round of interviews are expected to be held by February 2015. Please email doctoral<στο>graphene.cam.ac.uk to inform us once you have submitted your application.

There may be a further opportunity to submit your application in a second round, closing on February 28th 2015. However, places on the Graphene Technology CDT are limited, and we will only open further rounds of applications if we do not make all available offers during the 1st round.

Further information on the application process can be found at http://www.doctoral.graphene.cam.ac.uk/how-to-apply.
