JOB DESCRIPTION

The Retail Institute at Leeds Beckett University is offering an excellent opportunity for someone interested in the manufacture of fast moving consumer goods. This PhD studentship is sponsored by Nestle and the Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
The student will gain real-world industrial research experience from the collaboration between Leeds Beckett University and Nestlé as a part of a wider effort to increase the range of nutritional snacks, hence improving the diet and health of consumers.

The project aims to develop a better understanding of the factors that impact the freshness of wafer-based confectionery. The project will work to propose and develop new and innovative in-line and predictive tools for improving the product freshness from modern high speed wrapping systems.
This is a four year BBSRC CASE studentship with a tax-free stipend of £14,200 per annum, plus tuition fees at the UK rate. There is also an industrial supplement, support for training, attendance at conferences and travel to Nestlé premises.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

The candidate must have at least an upper second honours degree, preferably in the physical sciences or engineering, although enthusiastic candidates with other technical degrees will be seriously considered.
The candidate will join a lively and expanding research group leading in the application of retail packaging to industrial problems of national importance.
