Postdoctoral Scientist - Atmospheric Sciences

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary centre for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an internationally recognized reputation in climate modeling. Within the EU-FP7 project BACCHUS (Impact of Biogenic versus Anthropogenic emissions on Clouds and Climate: towards a Holistic UnderStanding) we are looking for a Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f, SAS2015-01) with a strong background and interest in the effect of atmospheric composition on radiative forcing, particularly with respect to climate changes between 1850 and the present. The successful applicant will work with a small team of scientists to better understand the role of aerosol (including that associated with volcanism) forcing on the historical climate record through the use and development of a hierarchy of models. The position offers considerably flexibility and opportunity for scientific visibility and growth, for instance through participation in and possible leadership of components of in the Radiative Forcing model inter-comparision project (RFMIP). RFMIP is planned as one of the building blocks for CMIP6. The initial focus of the work will be to quantify how the amplitude and pattern of aerosol induced changes in cloud radiative properties affect aerosol forcing in light of emerging theoretical frameworks that have been developed at the MPI.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

A PhD in atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics or computational science is required for this position. Previous working experience with atmospheric radiative transfer issues and in investigations of climate impacts are of advantage. The applicant should have expertise in scientific computing, including programming (familiarity to FORTRAN programming, to UNIX computing environments and to shell scripting), data analysis (statistical understanding) and data manipulation and presentation skills (nco tools, cdo tools, ncl plotting).
