PhD Researcher: Advanced Computer Models and Methods for Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building Design

The research group Architectural Engineering aims for innovation in building design by adopting an engineering approach to architecture. The focus is on the technical aspects of architecture such as structural systems, building physics, MEP, acoustics, and lighting. These elements are tackled in a multidisciplinary setting in order to assess and improve the overall performance and sustainability of buildings and the built environment.

Project

Sustainable design of the built environment and its requirements such as energy-efficiency, reduction of emissions, economy of resource and financial means, etc. with their discipline crossing character cause significant complexities for design and planning. In this situation, systems engineering with its multidisciplinary computer modelling approach has high potential to support sustainable building design. The project aims at the transfer of systems engineering to the design process and at the development of novel computer methods and models supporting sustainable building in the design process.

Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate with the following qualifications:

  • Motivation to develop novel computer models and methods for building design
  • Degree of Master of Science in Engineering (architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, informatics etc.)
  • Skills of computer modelling, simulation and programming and basic knowledge and interest in building design are helpful
  • In addition to a scientific and research attitude, the candidate can process complex matters in an independent way.
  • The ability to present research results at conferences, and to publish in peer-reviewed journals in English.

Offer

The successful candidate will enter a highly evaluated scientific environment and be included in a young and dynamic group of six professors and seven researchers and PhD Students. He or she will focus on PhD research within the scope of the above described project. Furthermore, the candidate will contribute to the preparation of a research proposal that enlarges the scope of the project. He gets a contract as PhD scholar (doctoraatsbursaal, zie http://www.kuleuven.be/personeel/jobsite/phd-info).
