Job Description
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) seeks applications from enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join its staff in a Software Engineer position.
The successful applicant will be part of the team that delivers the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA), EMBL-EBI's globally comprehensive data resource covering nucleotide sequence information spanning millions of organisms and trillions of sequenced base pairs.
The post holder will be responsible for maintaining and improving ENA’s data presentation pipelines and will be expected to extend existing Java APIs and to design and implement novel applications and functionality in close collaboration with other developers, bioinformaticians and biologists. She/he may also be asked to participate in training events and to support external and internal users.
The EMBL-EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK, and is one of the world's leading bioinformatics centres, hosting many of the world's largest and most sophisticated scientific databases. Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a university degree in computer sciences or life sciences and have several years of experience in building Java applications, ideally in a multidisciplinary and service-oriented environment.
Applicants will be able to demonstrate:
- A strong command of Java
- Experience developing or maintaining web-based applications
- Proficiency with database connectivity and relational databases
- Experience in full software development cycle including design, implementation, testing, version control and deployment
- Willingness and self-motivation in learning new skills as the project requires
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and English language skills
