Sweden : PhD-student position in Limnology-analytical chemistry: organic matter processing in aquatic ecosystems

Description of the subject area: Applications are encouraged for a 4-year PhD-student position focusing on how organic matter in water and sediment interact with organisms, and its role in large-scale ecosystem processes. The work will be performed within a multidisciplinary project on the role of inland waters in the global carbon cycle (https://www.wallenberg.com/kaw/en/research/they-are-seeking-knowledge-about-contributions-lakes-earths-greenhouse-gas-balance). Research questions include the connections between the composition of organic matter and of microbial communities. The student will work at the programs of limnology (http://www.ebc.uu.se/forskning/IEG/limno/) and analytical chemistry (http://www.kemi.uu.se/Research/research-programs/analytical-chemistry/), towards a degree including both subjects (licentiate and PhD in one of the two subjects, respectively). The PhD work includes experiments, largely in controlled systems in the field, as well as analysis by high-resolution mass spectrometry and data analysis.

Eligibility: To be eligible for a PhD-student position, the applicant must hold a University degree in natural sciences, engineering or similar, with a focus on biogeochemistry/aquatic ecology/limnology/water and environmental engineering and/or analytical chemistry or other relevant subjects. Special weight will be given to earlier experience in biogeochemistry, aquatic science, as well analytical chemistry and multivariate data analysis. Strong motivation, flexibility, and capacity to independent work are important qualities. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.
