Doctoral Position in Embedded Optimization and Predictive Control

University of Oxford

A full-time fellowship position is available for a period of three years from October 2014, tenable at Oxford University. The position will be based at the Department of Engineering Science in Central Oxford. The successful candidate will be registered for PhD training while employed by the University on a Marie Curie Initial Training Network and will be expected to conduct research in optimization-based control methods for embedded systems. You will contribute to reports and discussions and undertake literature reviews. Candidates must possess a good degree in a relevant subject and should have experience of scientific computation tools and a strong background in control theory, optimization and numerical methods. The start date for this position is 19th January 2015.

One research position is offered as part of this project.  The position will focus on theoretical techniques for bounding computation time of control-specific optimization problems arising in model predictive control, with an emphasis on safety critical applications.

This position is funded as part of the European Commission funded Marie Curie Initial Training NetworkTEMPO (Training in Embedded Predictive Control and Optimization). TEMPO addresses the needs of European companies and society for embedded control technology, through training in cutting-edge research in the rapidly emerging inter-disciplinary field of embedded predictive control and optimization.

Further details about the TEMPO project can be found at: http://www.itk.ntnu.no/tempo.

The EC funding for this position is from £36,500 p.a. (depending on employer deductions, personal circumstances and the exchange rate to be notified by the EC), which includes an annual living allowance and a mobility allowance (to cover the expenses associated with working in a different country).

Candidate Requirements

Under the terms of the EC funding, which aims to promote mobility within the research community, to be eligible for the post you must not have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months in the past three years.

Additionally, you must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of your reseach career and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when you obtained the degree which would formally entitle you to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.

Exceptions to these criteria cannot be made.

In addition, candidates will be judged according to how well they meet the criteria detailed in the role profile.
