ESR/PhD Student Position: Conducting Polymer-Carbon based composite ionic electroactive polymer materials

ESR/PhD Student Position: Conducting Polymer-Carbon based composite ionic electroactive polymer materials.

Host: University of Tartu (Estonia) www.ut.ee, Intelligent Materials and Systems Lab, Institute of Technology

Objectives:
Applications are invited for PhD position to be funded by the ITN “MICACT – Microactuators” within the H2020 Programme of the European Commission. The ESR will obtain PhD with a wide experience in materials engineering. The main objective is to develop polypyrrole - Carbon (PPy/C) hybrid materials for improved actuation of IEAPs. It showed that PPy - Carbide Derived Carbon (CDC) hybrid materials resulted in interesting properties such as an improved volume change per unit of charge. ESR will collaborate with Linköping University (Sweden). The composite materials will result in improved actuation performance. The composites will have a higher conductivity, better charge and ion injection and thus larger strain. ESR will develop a variety of methods to fabricate these composites, e.g. one-pot electrochemical synthesis and inkjet or 3D printing of aerogels combined with electrosynthesis, will adapt the synthesis for microfabrication and demonstrate IEAP microactuators.
