PhD position

The working group Mathematical Modelling of the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of Marine Systems (ICBM) at the Carl-von-Ossietzky University of Oldenburg offers a

PhD position: Theoretical Ecology E13 TV-L, 75%

The position starts in 2015 and is available for three years for DFG - project

Linking resource competition and biodiversity in meta-ecosystems

The project aims to gain a mechanistic understanding of the relationships between resource competition, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in meta-ecosystems. Within the project we also have a unique opportunity to validate theoretical results by comparing them with results of experiments which have been already started in the group of Dr Robert Ptacnik, WasserCluster Lunz, Austria, and there will be an opportunity for an extended stay at the Biological Station Lunz.

The successful candidate will

  •     develop the theory of resource competition in heterogeneous environments
  •     analyze the potential effects of resource heterogeneity on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning
  •     aid the experimental investigations by predicting results

An ideal applicant must have

  •     an academic university degree (e.g. Master or Diploma) in ecology, biology, engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or related areas
  •     prior programming experience
  •     experience with aquatic ecology or mathematical modeling
  •     good knowledge of English

The applicants should have a strong interest to work in an interdisciplinary team.
