Design and urban engineering – While (TRP) and Bauman (ARC) will take forward investigation of the relationship between urban design and infrastructure. In the cities of the future infrastructure will be more visible (energy storage, decentralised energy generation, making space for water) and more harmoniously integrated within neighbourhoods. We predict that the next big issue in urban engineering will be the design dimension as neighbourhoods are retrofitted around new infrastructural challenges. This might involve new relationships between infrastructure providers, engineers and designers, but also work with citizens and city leaders to (re)engage with questions of infrastructural and urban design aesthetics. The student will have freedom to develop their own proposal around those questions. The PhD is part of a broader interdisciplinary PhD network on Future Cities within the University of Sheffield.
