Ph.D. Position in software defined radio and networking

The TELEMIC group of the Electrical Engineering Dept. ESAT of KU Leuven, is looking for a motivated Ph.D. candidate with an interest in both wireless communication and software defined radio for a research project on software defined radio and networking.

This job opening covers a research position at KU Leuven (Belgium) for a Ph.D. candidate in the frame of a project on control interface for software defined radio and networking.

The aim of this project is the study of a software defined radio and networking approach for the Internet-of-Things. Below, three main motivations for such an approach are given:

First, we see that important applications rely on the availability of high-performance
reliable wireless communication. The standard operation of wireless technologies and protocols is
often insufficient, and several custom tweaks and adaptations of the radio control software are required
to meet specific application needs. As such, innovative custom radio solutions are needed.

Next, in order to achieve this innovation at limited cost & development efforts, the communication
architecture has to evolve from closed vertical solutions to open horizontal platforms that can be
reused in multiple application domains. Applications and devices will remain domain specific.
However, the network protocols and technologies that offer communication services to applications
running on domain specific devices, should be shared, avoiding repeated design and development costs
in each vertical market. As such, universal modular radio control software is needed.

Finally, innovative radio solutions furthermore require various degrees of adaptation or tuning. First, the radio
application should automatically be optimized for the current hardware platform, wireless technology
of vertical application domain. Second, as the wireless communication scene is very diverse and
dynamic, any reliable protocol should be adaptive. As such, reconfiguration intelligence is needed.

To tackle this, we will work in a project with 6 PhD students across various universities in Belgium, each taking care of part of the project.

This job opening covers a research position at KU Leuven (Belgium) for Ph.D. candidate in the frame of a project on software defined radio and networking, hence we are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in wireless communication, Internet-of-Things.

The proposed methods will be implemented and verified on a software defined radio testbed. In addition to strong analytical skills, we are hence also looking for candidates with a desire for implementing their proposed techniques on the testbed.
The candidate should be a good team player, open for cooperation with the other PhD students involved in the project.
