PhD Studentship: In-situ monitoring and alignment of nanoparticles in polymer melts

Project Overview: 

Effective dispersion and distribution of nanoparticles in polymer melts during mixing is critical to producing nanocomposites with enhanced properties. However, the structural evolution of the composite material and the processing parameters employed during melt mixing in twin-screw extruders has not been studied in detail. This project will focus on 1) using a range of spectroscopic techniques coupled along the barrel and in the extrusion die attempt to study the evolution of the structure of composites of model polymer – nanoparticle systems and 2) investigate the controlled alignment of nanoparticles in the polymer melt using externally applied magnetic fields. The successful candidate will be based in the newly founded International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing (IINM).

Funding Details: Fees and maintenance at RCUK Level Length of Award: 3 years (PhD)

Eligibility: Due to funding restrictions funding is available for well-qualified UK or EU students. Other motivated students are encouraged to apply but will need to secure their own funding. Candidates should hold a 1st or 2.1 degree in any science or engineering discipline which had a materials content.
