MPhil/PhD Scholarship:Nanoscale Chemical Mapping Using a New Paradigm for Correlating Topographical and Analytical Data

University of Greenwich - Faculty of Engineering and Science

This interdisciplinary project has been developed in collaboration with Prof. Mike Reading and is based on Prof. Reading’s previous experience of development of nanoscale surface imaging techniques Nano-TA and Nano-IR.

All current near-field methods of analysis rely on exploiting interactions between the tip of the AFM and the sample within an external field. In the new approach material is selectively removed from the surface and then analysed. Use of the appropriate software enables the analytical data to be correlated with the changes in the surface of the sample; this can be undertaken at the nanoscale.  One of the objectives of the project is to enable a more detailed analysis of the data obtained so that tomography can be achieved. The work at Greenwich is part of a collaboration with Huddersfield University; its world-class metrology facilities will be used for surface characterisation.

The development of the foregoing approach will enrich our scientific knowledge of the interactions between materials, assess the effectiveness of industrial processes (i.e. mixing, milling, homogenisation, and compaction) and drive the design and pre-formulation of pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food products resulting in more effective and stable products.
