PhD Studentships for UK and EU nationals in Sensor Technologies and Application

Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

Reference: NQ04753
Closing date: 02 December 2014

Up to 10 fully funded PhD studentships for UK and EU nationals* are available at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sensor Technologies and Applications at the University of Cambridge (http://cdt.sensors.cam.ac.uk).

Starting in October 2015, the programme aims to train students across the full breadth of topics that modern sensor research encompasses, including physical concepts of sensing, sensor technologies, sensor-design principles, sensor networks, processing of sensory data, and sensor applications. This interdisciplinary programme will draw upon taught modules and academic programmes across several departments and institutes at Cambridge University, and it is supported by a number of industrial partners including Alphasense, Shell, Rolls-Royce, Cambridge Display Technologies, Nokia and Costain.

We welcome applications from exceptional students from any field of Science and Engineering who have obtained a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent). They should possess an innovative approach to problem solving, well-developed technical skills, and possess the aptitude and aspiration to become world leaders in the field of sensor technologies and applications.

The programme is structured in two phases: a one-year taught MRes course followed by a three-year PhD research programme. The one-year MRes course will comprise of a foundational course in sensor technologies, taught modules and practicals, a guided sensor project and a team challenge conducted in collaboration with industrial partners. Upon successful completion of the first year (i.e. attainment of the MRes qualification, with a mark equivalent to at least an upper-second class qualification), students will be allowed to register for a PhD, choosing from approved project proposals offered by the approximately 50 participating academic PIs. More details on the programme and how to apply is available from:http://cdt.sensors.cam.ac.uk

We have an average of 10 fully funded UK/EU scholarships* per annum (currently £13,863 student maintenance per year + fees at the Home/EU rate). A minimum of 7 of these are reserved for UK Nationals or EU Nationals who have studied for three years in the UK. Full student eligibility information can be found here: http://cdt.sensors.cam.ac.uk/how-to-apply/studentships.

*Overseas/non-EU applicants are not eligible to obtain funding from the CDT but can be admitted to the course if alternative funding is available to cover the full cost of the course, e.g. via external scholarships. The application deadline for scholarships administered by the Cambridge Trust is 2nd December 2014. Other deadlines will vary.

Full applications should be made on-line via the Cambridge Graduate Admissions Office before the deadline and a CV sent separately to Dr. Oliver Hadeler, admin<στο>sensors.cam.ac.uk. The full application procedure is explained at http://cdt.sensors.cam.ac.uk/how-to-apply. Please note that your application must include a completed GRADSAF form, including references and academic transcripts submitted correctly with your on-line application.

Round 1 closes on 2 December, but the deadline will be extended if places remain.
