Project Description

The School of Engineering of the University of Glasgow is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake an exciting 3/3.5-year PhD project entitled ‘Experimental Aerodynamics’ within the Aerospace Sciences Research Division.

The PhD studentship is in collaboration with industry. The project will involve experimental research to study the fundamental flow physics and aerodynamics effectiveness of novel configurations and advanced flight and flow control actuators using wind tunnel testing, and advanced flow diagnostics and instrumentation. The investigation will be supported by numerical simulations and theoretical analysis.

Interested applicants should have a keen interest in fluid mechanics and a willingness to learn and develop new experimental techniques including laser-based diagnostics (PIV/PSP/LDA). A good knowledge of aerodynamics and experience performing experimental research are desirable. Applications are invited from candidates with (or who expect to gain) a good upper-second or first-class honours degree in Aeronautical engineering or a related discipline.

The University of Glasgow has been a home to aerospace research for over 70 years, and today our researchers are tackling the multidisciplinary challenges faced by the aerospace industry in the 21st century. We nurture a strong, diverse research portfolio and have established major initiatives to deliver capability and technologies that contribute to the global aims of greener, faster and safer travel. We are a hub in the UK’s National Wind Tunnel Facility and we are part of the Vertical-Lift Network Consortium to develop a new helicopter / tilt-rotor blade experimental test rig, which would be able to test and demonstrate new technologies to help drive rotorcraft performance improvements.

Funding

The studentship will cover home tuition fees and provide a stipend of £13,863 per annum for 3.5 years.

Due to funding restrictions, the studentship is only available to candidates who are UK citizens. EU citizens are also welcome to apply if they are satisfying the standard EPSRC residency requirements.
