PhD Studentship: Additive Manufacturing/3d Printing For Healthcare Devices

Loughborough University - Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

Applications are invited for a fully sponsored PhD studentship (3 years) to work in conjunction with an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded research project concerning future prosthetic limb devices. This multi-disciplinary endeavour between the academics fields of manufacturing engineering, chemistry and biology and will also be conducted in collaboration with the company Blatchford.

About the research: The project will explore the fundamental elements for engineering an interface between residual nerves and a prosthetic device. This will require the design and production of new forms of test and analysis platforms for influencing cellular behaviour, which would be used to lead and inform the construction of these biological/prosthetic interfaces. The key enabling technology for this research will be novel additive manufacturing / 3D Printing apparatuses produced within the project. This role will be within a larger project team comprising of: two Research Associates focussing on engineering and biology/chemistry elements respectively, a technician, the academic supervisors, and industrial collaborator.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will have a 1st class or high 2:1 honours degree in a Engineering, Science or other relevant discipline. An interest and basic understanding of manufacturing processes is desirable and good communication and experimental skills are essential. The three-year studentship has a stipend of £13,863 per annum tax free for UK/EU candidates with full tuition fees paid. For International students, studentships will be awarded to the value of £10,859 per year towards fees only.
