PhD Researcher - Unstructured Network Management

JOB DESCRIPTION

Within the department of Internet Technologies, the research group MOSAIC – University of Antwerp is looking for a PhD Researcher (ENG) - Management of Unstructured Networks.

iMinds - MOSAIC (Modeling of Systems and Internet Communications) research group is part of the Department of Internet Technologies at iMinds and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Antwerp. MOSAIC was founded in 1995 and performs basic and applied research in the domains of

(1) Management of communication networks, information systems and services,

(2) Analysis and development of network algorithms and network protocols.

(3) Modeling and simulation of complex systems and

(4) Stochastic modeling.

MOSAIC participates both in national and internationally funded research projects.

Within the research track on “Management of communication networks, information systems and services”, we are looking for a full-time PhD student. The research within this track aims at managing unstructured and chaotic networks. An unstructured network can be seen as any network model where a plethora of heterogeneous devices dynamically connect with each other in an uncontrolled fashion. Examples include Internet of Things, smart cities, high-density hotspots, etc. The goal of this research is to introduce high quality guarantees on the service delivery on these networks. Research challenges in this area include the self-organization of the network, supporting mobility, performing distributed decision making, etc.

Job description

You perform research in the domain of management of unstructured networks.

  • You are conducting research on novel ways of providing end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and/or Quality of Experience (QoE) delivery guarantees for broadband services with stringent requirements.
  • You apply your solutions to large-scale, decentralized, dynamic and lossy networks (e.g., user-deployed networks, smart city networks, sensor networks, etc.).
  • You will participate in the framework of European-level and national research projects.
  • You are building up hands-on experience by implementing these network concepts and by evaluating them through emulation on a large testbed or through detailed simulations.
  • You publish and present results both at international conferences and in scientific journals.
  • This research leads to a PhD degree. Throughout the complete PhD period, you receive a full-time, attractive salary. The exact topic of the PhD will be defined together with the candidate, based on his/her research interests.

Application:

Applications should consist of

1) A motivation letter
2) At least one reference letter
3) Full CV
4) A reference paper (if applicable) or a short summary of your master thesis or a research proposal related to the PhD topic (not more than one page)
