Postdoctoral position in Driver HMI

The department of Product and Production Development performs research and education in the areas of human factors, industrial design, design engineering and production development – and in the interaction between these disciplines. The research aims to shorten the time from idea to finished product while achieving an added value for the customer. Automotive and engineering industries are among the major customers. The department has approximately 85 employees and is organized into three sections: Design & Human Factors, Product Development and Production Systems.

Information about the project

Chalmers strategy for excellence in research, education and innovation is structured in eight Areas of Advance. Transport is one of these areas with Traffic Safety as one of three profiles.

Chalmers has a long history in Traffic Safety research as well as in extensive collaboration with industry as well as society. SAFER – Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre is the hub and physical meeting place for this collaborative, multi-disciplinary research and innovation.

The vision for the Transport Area of Advance is for Chalmers to become one of the world´s leading universities with regard to green, efficient, effective, and safe future transport systems. In line with this we are now opening for new Postdocs in the area of Traffic Safety. One of these positions will be placed at Division Design & Human Factors, Department of Product and Production Development (www.chalmers.se/ppd).

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master’s levels as well as supervising master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is a merit for future research within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary

There is a lack of understanding regarding human behaviour and methods to evaluate human-machine interaction (HMI) in partially and highly automated vehicles. HMI design principles that address the particular needs of vehicles capable of at least partially automated driving have yet to be developed. The overall goal of the project is to generate design principles, test methods and prototypes necessary to understand what constitutes good HMI design for automated vehicles. Good HMI is fundamental to optimize hand over of control, to minimize negative effects of automation induced behaviour, and to increase user acceptance and adoption.

The research area for the post-doc is Driver HMI with focus on autonomous vehicles. The applicant will become part of the project ‘HMI for Automated Driving in Traffic’ (HaTric), a collaboration project between Division Design & Human Factors at Chalmers, Volvo Cars, and VTI. The post doc will also become part of a network of post docs, all of which will conduct research in the area of autonomous vehicles and autonomous driving. The position will last for two years, beginning January 2015.

Full-time temporary employment.

Requirements and experiences

– You must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; the degree should generally not be older than three years.
– Sound background in human factors (design/engineering), specifically in the area of HMI. Earlier experience of vehicle HMI design is desired but not necessary;
– A keen interest in the area of driver behavior, HMI and methodology. Experience of experimental studies is desired. Experience of driving simulator studies is desired but not necessary;
– Ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary team as well as ability to work independently;
– Ability and interest to communicate scientific results, both orally and in writing;
– Very good knowledge of English. Proficiency also in Swedish is desired. Chalmers offers Swedish courses;
– You are also expected to have some experience of teaching on a university level.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
