2 PhD positions in Computer Networking

Two PhD positions are available within the Distributed Systems and Communications (DISCO) group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Karlstad University. Research within the DISCO group is focused on development of transport and application layer protocols, cross-layer interactions, networking techniques for low latency Internet communication and the design of future wireless access and backhaul systems, including Software Defined Networking (SDN).

The two positions are connected to a new research profile on High Quality Networked Services in a Mobile World. The profile is funded by the Swedish KK-Foundation and is carried out in close collaboration with industrial partners. Position 1 will also have synergies with a new upcoming project within the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Framework Programme targeting a new transport layer architecture for the Internet.

Eligibility
Eligible for these positions are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, from which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör Degrees in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Eligible are also those candidates who have achieved corresponding degrees or knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

Position 1
This position is focused on new evolutional transport frameworks for the Internet. It is closely related to recent standardization initiatives within the IETF and targets solutions that allow end hosts and network elements to adapt to application demands and its environment, providing flexible trade-offs between for example performance, energy-efficiency and cost. Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of transport protocols, resource allocation, wireless networks or performance modeling and evaluation is therefore desirable.

Position 2
This position is focused on scalable signaling support for future mobile systems; targeting solutions for cost-efficient low-latency transport in the LTE evolved packet core and the integration with Cloud Telecoms including key technologies such as Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of transport protocols, cellular system architectures and protocols, cloud-based architectures, resource allocation or performance modeling and evaluation is therefore desirable.
Good programming skills as well as good oral and written communication skills in English are required for both positions. The candidates should be able to work independently, as well as in a team; and be enthusiastic about pushing the state-of-the-art. Collaboration with academic and industry partners through national/international research projects is expected.

Terms
The positions are limited to 4 years, but can be prolonged for up to one more year, if the PhD student also takes over other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides her/his PhD research. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position. The earliest date for filling the position is the February 1, 2015.

Admission
Admission is based on individual assessment of the candidates’ abilities to successfully pass the research education.
