For Section 1.3 "Earth System Modelling" within Department 1 "Geodesy and Remote Sensing", we invite applications for a
Ph.D. Positon (m/f)
Job Vacancy No. 58/13/14 D
Your tasks:
- sensitivity experiments with a global numerical ocean model to assess changes in sea-level, bottom pressure, and ocean currents in response to rapid atmospheric variability on time-scales from hours to several days
- quantification of the ocean angular momentum budget and its consequences for the time-variable earth rotation
- assessment of globally acting torques that transfer angular momentum between oceans and atmosphere or lithosphere with particular emphasis on sub-daily time-scales
- presentation of your work at international conferences, and publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals
Starting date:
1 January 2015
Fixed term:
2 years, with possible extension
Working hours:
part-time (19.5 h/week)

EG 13 TVöD-Bund (Ost)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Your qualifications:
- M.Sc. in Physics, Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Geodesy, or a related field
- strong mathematical background, interest in numerical modelling and high-performance computing
- any previous experience related to geophysical fluid dynamics would be an advantage
- ability to communicate efficiently in English
