Position description

Mälardalen University (MDH) announces a Postdoc position in Computer Science, specializing in Parallel Processing of Large Datasets. The School of Innovation, Design and Engineering (IDT) provides an international research-intensive environment with strong focus on Embedded Systems (ES). You can read more at http://www.es.mdh.se/

We are offering a Postdoc position in the area of parallel computing within the research project RALF3: Software for Embedded High Performance Architectures(http://www.mrtc.mdh.se/projects/ralf3/) funded by Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. The overall goal of the project is to develop theories, methods and tools that support design and development of systems that process large amount of data in real-time on modern heterogeneous computing platforms that include multi-core CPUs, many-core GPUs, and FPGAs.

The Postdoc position is intended for research and development of efficient parallel data structures and algorithms that by efficient utilization of heterogeneous computing platforms enables novel important real-time applications, for example in computer graphics, visualization, image processing, or data mining. The area of research can be adapted partly after the expertise of the applicant. Teamwork with senior researchers and PhD students is assumed. The employment is planned for a period of one year with a possibility to prolong it one year more.

Developing efficient algorithmic solutions for modern heterogeneous systems, which may require the simultaneous utilization of several fundamentally different compute targets, such as CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs, is challenging and often relies on low-level code optimizations and appropriate work division among devices with specific strengths and weaknesses. Understanding how to develop efficient algorithmic solutions running on such systems is important for the industry, since improved utilization of the computational power opens up the possibility for a wide range of important embedded real-time applications related to computational sciences. Based on careful case studies on selected massive computational problems, which are closely tied to applications in for example computer graphics, visualization, image processing, or data mining, we seek novel algorithmic solutions amenable for parallel processing on different types of parallel platforms. The overall goal is then to extract more general knowledge from these case studies, that is, to find efficient computational techniques and data representations which are adaptive and applicable in broader contexts.

Qualification requierements

The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in Computer Science or a closely related field.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Special requirements

Good knowledge in programming, data structures, algorithms, and parallel computing is required. In depth knowledge in an application area where efficient handling and processing of large data sets is of importance is advantageous. Relevant areas are for example computer graphics, visualization, image processing, or data mining. Experience in GPU programming is a plus. Finally, writing well in English is also of importance for the position.
