Postdoctoral - Graphene-based Polymer Composites Modelling

JOB DESCRIPTION

A postdoctoral position is available within the group of Professor Ahmed Elmarakbi in the Department of Computing, Engineering and Technology at the University of Sunderland, to work on the modelling of graphene-based polymer composites for automotive applications.  The work includes new material modelling, finite element simulation, validation, optimisation, testing, and crash analysis of the new developed materials. Great emphasis will be given to developing new constitutive laws and novel algorithms to accurately model new graphene composite materials with different syntheses and to predicting their efficiency and safety behaviours and long-term performance.

This post is for 8 months from 1st January 2015 and is part of the large multi-national project EU Graphene Flagship “GRAPHENE - Graphene-Based Revolutions in ICT and Beyond”. The Flagship project started on 1 October 2013 and will run for 30 months. Prof. Elmarakbi and his team forms part of the Flagship Work Package WP10 devoted to the nanocomposites and automotive applications of graphene, and will lead the modelling and optimising of the graphene composites under different severe conditions (i.e .crash). For more information on the project please see the following link: graphene-flagship.eu.

Candidates should have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Solid Mechanics, Materials Science or any relevant discipline. Postdoctoral experience in relevant research fields is desirable.

Candidates should have strong background on advanced composite materials and in nonlinear multi-scale material and structure modelling. For full details and selection criteria please refer to the job description. The successful candidate will join the Energy Efficient and Safe Vehicle Group at the University of Sunderland. High-performance computing resources will be available.
