Postdoctoral Position - Smart Machines and Materials - Nano-composites

JOB DESCRIPTION

Future Machines must become more efficient, easier, smarter and safer and have a minimal impact on the climate, nature and human life. They must also become more efficient and lighter in order to reduce energy consumption, cost and the use of resources. Machines have to be smarter and safer, in order to offer more flexibility, more autonomy and less risk of injury.

Smart Machine and Materials (SM2) at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) aims to develop new technologies and new materials that make it possible to reduce the weight and optimize the strength, to enhance the tribological and interface properties, efficiency and robustness, to be able to monitor a product remotely and to interpret signals and take action using intelligent automatic methods.

SM2 mission@LTU: Enabling the development of smarter machines, materials and processes, by establishing new methods, tools, models and multidisciplinary approaches, through research and understanding of physical phenomena. LTU is a leading university promoting smart machines, materials and processes through multi-disciplinary and multi-scale approaches in mechanical engineering and materials science

Subject description

Postdoctoral position within Smart Machines and Materials (SM2) are one of the strong research and innovation areas at LTU. The research project has focus on the profound need of developing reinforced and high performance polymeric based composite material having better mechanical, thermal, tribological and surface properties, by using multiscale/self -reinforced method and surface modified carbon based reinforcement systems. The outcomes of the project would comprehensively lead us to the understanding of practical optimization of performance parameters and its correlation to the compositional attributes, which would guide the research community in developing new generation composite materials for realistic design of different functionally advanced polymeric based composites such as self-cleaning, shape-memory, electric conductive, self-healing and self-lubricating polymeric composites with target tailored properties for various applications in different industries such as (wind power, hydropower, sport gears, boat and military industries or medical devices).

Work Duties

(1) Design of multiscale manufacturing process and optimization of modification and characterization of the surface of reinforcement systems.

(2) Studying the surface properties (wettability), surface energy, mechanical and tribological properties of polymeric based composites including different kinds of micro- and nano-reinforcement systems before and after surface modification.

(3) Study of the tribological and mechanical properties of developed polymer based composites with specific properties such as self-cleaning, shape-memory, slef-healing, self-lubricating and/or electric conducting. Different characterization methods such as optical characterization (TEM, SEM), cryatalinity and thermal characterization together with spectroscopy analyses (EDX, DSC, TGA, XPS) will be used at different stage in this project.
