Background: The Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College has several PhD studentships available within the HydroFrame radioactive waste disposal project. HydroFrame, a collaboration between Imperial College, the University of Leeds, and the University of Birmingham, is funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the UK Environment Agency (EA), and the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), as part of the Radioactivity and the Environment (RATE) Programme.
Technical Scope: This PhD project is to be supervised by Dr John-Paul Latham, Dr Jiansheng Xiang, and Professor Christopher Pain and will focus on the development of a thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled model for fractured and fracturing rocks subject to heterogeneous mechanical, hydraulic and thermal loads.
Requirements: Applicants should have a Masters degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, geology/geophysics, physics, computational mathematics, or any area of science/engineering that provides a strong background in numerical modelling. Applicants should also have good skills in programming in a scientific programming language such as C/C++, Fortran or Python.
Other details: This is a 3-year PhD studentship, which will cover the Imperial College tuition fees, and provide a non-taxable bursary of £16,000 per year. Applicants must be eligible for NERC PhD funding, i.e., UK and non-UK EU nationals who have spent the previous three years in the UK undertaking education (undergraduate study or masters). The project will involve frequent interaction with the other participants of the HydroFrame project and RATE programme, including summer schools and workshops.
