PhD Project at the Interface of Physics, Engineering & Medicine

Motion-correction Methods for Clinical Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS)

The Unit for Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Methodology of the University Bern, Switzerland (http://www.amsm.dkf.unibe.ch/), in collaboration with the Institute for Biomedical Engineering of ETH & University Zurich, and the Institute of Neurology, University Bern, is looking for a Ph.D. student to work on the Swiss National Science Foundation Project ‘Magnetic Resonance Techniques to Determine Metabolite Levels: Extending Scope and Clinical Robustness.

Description

The proposed Ph.D. project will involve:
- learning of NMR theory, particularly as relevant to in vivo applications of MR spectroscopy and imaging
- learning to program a Siemens MR scanner (in C++)
- development of MRS methods for quantitative clinical MR spectroscopy that include real-time motion correction based on video signals in collaboration with research groups in Leipzig, Freiburg and Honolulu
- application of currently available and these newly developed MR sequences to record spectra in volunteers to study the physiology of sleep.

PhD student applicants should hold a masters (or equivalent degree) in physics, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Candidates with strong programming skills (C++, Java, matlab) and/or previous experience in magnetic resonance are preferred. Excellent knowledge of German or English is required. Regulations of our Graduate School can be found at www.gcb.unibe.ch.

A general interest in multidisciplinary work is a must.
For legal reasons preference must be given to Swiss & EU citizens.
