PhD Scholarships in Environmental Sustainability Assessment, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark (2015)

Department for Management Engineering’s division for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment covers research and development of scientifically based engineering methods and tools for decision support for environmental and social sustainability. Methodological research and tool development aim at quantitative sustainability assessment of technologies, products and systems.

Responsibilities and tasks
Using state-of-the-art concepts of absolute sustainability and life cycle assessment, the successful candidate will contribute to integrating and operationalizing absolute environmental sustainability approaches, e.g. chemical footprints in the context of ecological limits, into life-cycle based decision-making.

Key activities include: (a) developing a mathematical framework for integrating planetary boundaries developed for selected planetary threads (e.g. biodiversity loss and chemical pollution), into impact categories relevant in life cycle assessment (e.g. land use, climate change, ecotoxicity); (b) creating new indicators for absolute sustainability and operationalizing them for use in life cycle assessment; (c) comparing the new absolute sustainability indicators with indicators traditionally used in life-cycle based decision making on selected case studies.

Application deadline is November 21, 2014
