Postdoc in interaction design

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 13,400 first and second level students and almost 1,900 doctoral students. KTH has 4,900 employees.

KTH Computer Science and Communication is one of the most outstanding research and teaching environments in Information Technology in Sweden with activities at KTH and partly at Stockholm University.

We conduct education and research in both Theoretical and Applied Computer science. Theoretical Computer science ranges from theory building and analysis of mathematical models to algorithm construction, implementation and simulation. Applied computer science covers a wide spectrum from Computer Vision, Robotics, Machine Learning, High Performance Computing, Visualization, Computational Biology, Neuroinformatics and Neural Networks, and Speech and Music Communication. We also conduct applied research and training in Media Technology, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design and Sustainable Development.

Job description

KTH Computer Science and Communication (CSC) announce a postdoctoral position in interaction design.

The department of Media technology and interaction design originates in computer and behavioral science, as well as graphic technology and media technology. Today, it has a faculty that represents for example anthropology and psychology, computer science and media technology, interaction design, film and literature science, as well as media and communication sciences. In brief, the area can be described as innovative design, modification and improvement of existing systems and processes in order to simplify computer and media usage, as well as media production. The group works with technologies and methods to support human communication in time and space.

The research will be conducted at Green Leap, an interdisciplinary research group within CESC, Centre for Sustainable Communications. The goal of Green Leap is to act as a catalyst for change by engaging design in sustainable development. Here, researchers and designers work on solving the challenges around a future sustainable everyday life.

The goal for the research is, within the project ‘Design for an Energy Efficient Campus Life in Albano’, to explore how the designs of local areas can encourage sustainable behaviours, and lowered energy use. You will use design both as an explorative tool to investigate how to develop symbols as well as visualizations of energy flows in local areas, and as a communicative tool to initiate discussions and awareness about how our surroundings could spur more sustainable everyday practices. The results will, among other things, be a number of design concepts in the form of models and scenarios. These are then evaluated and discussed in focus groups with experts, users and other stakeholders reflecting on the designs in relation to their own everyday practices.

Your work tasks are to lead a small research group consisting of designers, architects and social scientists, to write research papers, produce design concepts and to be the lead writer of the final report about the project.

The position is mainly a research position, with a smaller fraction of departmental duties (e.g. teaching).

Qualifications

A preferred background for this position would be design research with focus on sustainability and interaction design along with experience to work with design driven projects where aspects around designs are central. A PhD in a topic relevant for the research, such as interaction design, field is required.
