PhD Researcher: Wireless Inductive Power Transfer

For Electrical Engineering (ESAT) TC, Technology Campus Ghent, we are looking for a PhD researcher in the domain of wireless energy transfer by means of inductive coupling.

Description

The research group DraMCo of KU Leuven, department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), has build, since its founding in 2002, a strong reputation regarding wireless and mobile communication applications. Multiple, close collaborations and contacts with (inter)national industrial and academic partners form the basis for conducting research in this group. The main, often demand-driven, research topics are closely related to the Internet of Things, energy harvesting, wireless power transfer and indoor positioning technologies. The ultimate goal of this research unit is to accelerate the introduction of new technologies in the industry on one hand, and to study and develop these new technologies in more depth within the framework of PhD research on the other hand.
This PhD topic is located within the research line of wireless energy transfer by means of inductive coupling. Compared to galvanic coupling, inductive charging offers some significant advantages. The devices can be made perfectly waterproof for outdoor applications, there is enhanced consumer comfort, flexibility and ease of use due to the absence of the power cable to the device, recharging batteries of biological implants without surgery becomes possible, ... This technology becomes more and more integrated in the high-end devices such as smart phones and smart watches. Within this PhD research, the goal is to make the technology more accessible for non-static configurations, with special attention for robustness and reliability. The emphasis will be on the optimal design of coils that lead to a desired magnetic field profile and the design of dedicated communication protocols for non-standard configurations. The knowledge of wireless power transfer is well established within DraMCo, the candidate can further develop in-house knowledge based on previous experience obtained in other research projects.
