Job description

You as a Materials Technologist are responsible for the research, specification, design and development of materials and materials processes to advance technologies of many kinds. Your expertise lies in understanding the properties and behaviors of different substances, from raw materials to finished products. Potentially your work includes different materials:

  • ceramics;
  • composites;
  • polymers;


Working in a diverse range of industries and customers, you combine or modify materials in different ways to improve the performance, durability and cost-effectiveness of processes and products. Typical work activities are:

  • Process development of materials for use in a variety of manufacturing processes.
  • selecting the best combination of materials and process for specific applications and properties (such as electrical conductivity, durability, renewability);
  • experimental verification of chosen materials and process including mechanical testing, corrosion or chemical attack, thermal stability etc.;
  • developing application based proof of concept demonstrators and prototypes;
  • helping to ensure that products comply with national and international legal and quality standards;
  • liaising with colleagues and customers in manufacturing, technical and scientific support, purchasing, and marketing;
  • supervising the work of materials engineering assistants and other staff;
  • You’ll be responsible for:
    - The planning and execution of technical work, either by yourself or by colleagues.
    - Communication with customers (OEM, Suppliers, Internal) on technical progress and results.
    - Delivering input for project definition and acquisition. 
  • It is anticipated that you’ll take responsibility for the execution of projects in the role of a project leader, as well that you develop and maintain a network with scientific industrial peers and partners

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Your competences include knowledge on inorganic materials, properties and processing. Background in the synthesis and processing of ceramic or polymers appreciated. You have a good overview of the various analytical and testing tools available.
  • You are a good communicator. Able to express your thoughts and findings in a clear concise manner, both orally and written.
  • You are capable of leading a discussion, and guiding it to a satisfactory outcome.
  • You are inquisitive, and creative, yet capable of maintaining focus on the task presented.
  • You are capable of maintaining overview of and planning your activities.
  • Your competences include materials know-how and know-why for ceramics and/or polymers, microscopy and microstructure evaluation, and materials-performance testing . In support of this, an extensive range of materials analysis, characterization and testing laboratories is at hand. You will be involved in project planning, experimental design, and hands on experimentation. You should have a broad range of expertise and perform well in multidisciplinary projects. You should be interested in pushing the limits of current material properties through materials processing design.
  • You are educated or have work experience in the EU or USA.
