Job Description
A Data Manager/Developer is sought to join the Functional Genomics Software Development Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

We are looking for a Data Manager/Developer to work with various databases, including ArrayExpress, the existing archive of functional genomics experiments, and BioStudy database, a new data resource that will serve as a generic data archive at EMBL-EBI for biomolecular datasets. The post holder will report to the Functional Genomics Development team leader and will participate in:

  • Day-to-day management and maintenance of the current ArrayExpress data submission workflows, databases and software, including pipelines for data exchange with other EMBL-EBI resource (e.g. European Nucleotide Archive).
  • Collaborative effort between the ArrayExpress content team and the BioStudy software development team to rationalise the existing ArrayExpress data submission processes and to design, implement and maintain robust and reliable submission workflows for the BioStudy database.
  • Providing user support, documentation and training related to ArrayExpress and BioStudy data submission processes.
  • Development and extension of data formats and data processing applications within the Functional Genomics team infrastructure.
  • Testing and user support for data submissions-related software provided by the Functional Genomics Development team.
  • Data management for collaborative EU research projects in the areas of toxicogenomics and autism spectrum diseases.

Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must have a degree in computer science, IT, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related field, or an equivalent of at least 5 years of relevant professional experience including:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in core Java and Perl programming.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience with database applications and relational databases: SQL, Oracle and/or MySQL, PL/SQL.
  • Implementation of workflows and/or pipelines, work with large-scale computing platforms, i.e. LSF.
  • UNIX/Linux and shell scripting.
  • Solving database and application scalability problems.
  • User support, working as a part of a service team.
  • Knowledge of biology and experience in handling functional genomics, microarray and/or high-throughput sequencing data would be a distinct advantage. 

The post-holder must be able to show initiative, take responsibility for timely delivery, and be a good team player. The ability to communicate efficiently with other group members (software developers and biologists) is essential. They will be able to work independently on assigned tasks, have a good eye for detail, and think independently and creatively.
