PG-13 Researcher

The Tyndall National Institute is a world leader in the development of silicon-based microneedle hardware for use in very diverse applications ranging from revolutionary transdermal drug and vaccine delivery patches to the next generation of portable x-ray systems. Working closely with a global range of commercial and academic partners, our technology is under evaluation by several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas. In parallel, Tyndall is currently rolling out an ambitious ‘ICT for Health’ strategy that will leverage our core strengths in Information and Communications Technologies to develop the next generation of breakthrough medical devices and systems.

The Tyndall National Institute is also part of the €75M Science Foundation Ireland-funded INSIGHT Centre – an initiative that will bring together a critical mass of more than 200 researchers from Ireland's leading ICT centres, and, together with more than 30 partner companies, will solve critical challenges in the areas of Connected Health and the Discovery Economy.

Description

As a result of this significant commercial and government investment, the Tyndall National Institute is now seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to join our INSIGHT team, primarily to work on the next generation of microneedle-based optical sensors for use in skin-based diagnostics.

Microneedles – short, sharp projections made using microfabrication technologies and measuring less than 1mm in height, are now attracting intense interest for applications in minimally invasive diagnostics and continuous monitoring, primarily due to their ability to painlessly perforate the skin barrier. Our aim is to develop revolutionary, wearable sensors, based around a combination of microneedles, optical technologies and medical device packaging, that will sense biomarkers from interstitial fluids and allow assessment of health and wellbeing based on indicators such as stress, glucose levels and cardiac health.

Applications include assisted living, increased patient autonomy, sports medicine and performance monitoring, and closed-loop transdermal delivery/diagnostics units.

Tyndall has several commercial partners in these areas and the candidate will work with these partners to develop devices that closely are aligned to industrial targets and specifications.
