Electronics Project Leader and Engineer CERN

Introduction

Electronics Project Leader and Engineer in the Technology Department (TE), Electrical Power Converter Group (EPC), Converter Controls Electronics Section (CCE).

As an Electronics Project Leader and Engineer you will be part of CERN's Technology Department (TE), which is responsible for technologies specific to existing particle accelerators, facilities and future projects.  You will join the Electrical Power Converter Group (TE-EPC) which is responsible for the power converters for the CERN accelerator complex, and in particular the Converter Controls Electronics Section (TE-EPC-CCE), whose mandate covers the design, realisation, operation and consolidation of power converter control systems.

Functions

As part of the Converter Controls Electronics team you will take on the dual role of electronics systems project leader and hands-on electronics engineer.

As electronics system project leader: you will oversee, direct and execute the implementation, operation, and consolidation of the modular power converter controls project.  You will work in close collaboration with all other sections of the group during the design and realization of the control system and its constituent modules.   You will:

  • Lead a team of electronics engineers and technicians;
  • Oversee and manage the projects under the team's remit, proactively and reactively managing project risks;
  • Understand, analyse and document user requirements;
  • Be the technical lead, setting the direction for the system electronics;
  • Lead and coordinate the implementation of programmable logic devices in the system, including versioning and documenting the RTL code;
  • Organise and chair meetings and reviews;
  • Develop and execute plans for development, production, installation and commissioning of the modular converter controls electronics systems;
  • Report on progress, monitoring and solving issues as they arise.

As electronics engineer: you will be hands-on in designing and realising the constituent parts of the converter controls electronics:

  • Design, implement, test and document electronic modules used in converter controls;
  • Create digital electronic circuits, with some small analogue functions;
  • Implement programmable logic devices, by using RTL code, such as VHDL;
  • Provide maintenance and debug information to be used during exploitation.

Qualification required

Master's degree in the field of Electronics or electricity (or equivalent).

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Electronic engineering project leadership: proven experience in leading an engineering team and delivering engineering solutions;
  • System level design and engineering: designing and developing system solutions from user requirements down through to bit level implementation;
  • Electronics design and engineering: developing reliable and robust electronic modules;
  • Programmable logic design: design and realisation of electronics based on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays and/or Programmable Logic Devices.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Project management;
  • Design of electronics for digital control systems and loops: low-level digital electronic design;
  • Design and development of systems based on standardized electronic modules.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Setting Direction: coordinating activities and focusing team on goals and objectives; monitoring progress of team towards agreed goals and taking corrective action when needed;
  • Bringing the best out of people: encouraging ideas and initiatives from others; fostering collaboration and team cohesion;
  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented;
  • Solving problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.

The language competencies required are:

  • English or French: spoken and written, with the ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports, and/or to make oral presentations. The ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts would be an advantage.
