Job Description
We are seeking a highly proficient and motivated Systems Administrator with a proven background in supporting users of a heterogeneous network and infrastructure to join the Systems group.

The Systems Applications group consists of 15 System Administrators split into Databases, Virtual Infrastructure and Desktop Administration. We are recruiting for a Systems Administrator in the desktop team.

Reporting to the Applications Team Leader, Andy Cafferkey, the desktop team are responsible for the support and administrator of EMBL-EBI's 850 Windows, Linux and OSX clients and their supporting infrastructure, including a Windows domain, application servers, VMware cluster and Xserves. The team also provide support for the VOIP phone system.

As part of this team you will be responsible for all aspects of support, encompassing 1st line support through 3rd line support, from clearing print queues right through to provisioning a shared calendar solution or installing new remote access systems.

Qualifications and Experience
You will ideally be educated to a technical degree level.

It is essential that you have:

  • Extensive skills in user support and system administration of OSX or Linux. This should include experience of deployment (ideally JAMF Casper Suite for OSX, or Kickstart for Linux), user management (NIS for Linux), file sharing (SMB/CIFS and NFS), and print servers
  • System administration experience in a heterogeneous environment (OSX, Windows and Linux)
  • Willingness to work with and build skills on Windows, OSX and Linux

Ideally you will have:

  • Windows OS support experience
  • Technical understanding of network protocols and services including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Wins, SMB, SMTP, NFS, NIS
  • Experience of troubleshooting LAN, WAN and WLAN issues from a user's perspective
  • Skills in Perl, Python or shell scripting

You will enjoy working in a friendly and fast paced environment and be able to efficiently manage your time. you will possess excellent organisational skills, and the ability to prioritise and manage tasks effectively, whilst working flexibly and independently as necessary.

You will have previous experience in similar roles, with a working knowledge and interest in technologies and the IT industry.

It is paramount that any candidate has exceptional problem solving skills and works well within a small team, as well as on their own. This role requires a high level of interaction with users of all technical abilities so good customer facing skills are essential. Excellent English, communication and interpersonal skills are necessary.
