Marie Curie Experienced Research Fellow: Industrial Automation & Control

Marie Curie research fellow position in R&D activities on Chemical Engineering, Process Control, Industrial Systems and Automation is available at City University London, Systems and Control Research Centre of the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering as of 1st January 2015 for a 12-month period. This position is part of the recently started Marie Curie IAPP (Industry Academia Partnerships and Pathways) project entitled “New weather-stable low gloss powder coatings based on bi-functional acrylic solid resins and nanoadditives” (GLOW). The consortium involves as participants two academic groups: the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Greece and the City University of London, UK, and three SME industrial companies: Steel Belt Systems, Italy, Israel Barter Trading, Israel and Megara Resins, Greece.

Description

The recruit should be an expert in process control, industrial systems, integration in upscalling of processes to the industrial production level in order to be able to: (a) identify the specific research and training needs for the scalling up of Laboratory Processes, (b) develop a "Technology Watch" System for the upscalling of the Laboratory results, (c) contribute to the identification of future research needs for taking to the industrial production level the successful processes of the project.
The overall goal of this project is to develop novel, advanced polymer-based raw and composite materials as well as processing and production technologies, towards new families of powder coatings, i.e. one-shot matt powder coatings, responding at the same time to the industrial requirements for quality improvement at lower cost, production of environmentally friendly materials and shorter development cycles. The project will pursue the generation of multifunctional formulations, based on new bi-functional polymeric binders and new nanoadditives aiming to expand significantly, both in terms of type and final application, the current range of powder coating systems to economically attractive niche markets. In this project, the acrylic resins development for one-shot matt powder coatings will be performed at Megara Resins while the development of nanoadditives with appropriate compatibility with powder coatings and some specific structural and spectroscopic characterizations will be performed at the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Greece and the industrial production line design adaptations at City University London.
Candidates who have a previous PhD degree in a field relevant to the mentioned project (Control, automation, process chemical engineering) may seek the fellowship. Preferred candidates will have experience in Control and Instrumentation, Automation, Process Systems Engineering, Modeling, and a very good understanding of relevant technologies. Systems Engineering allowing the scalling up of Laboratory Processes to the industrial level.
