PhD - Studentship in Robust Design Optimization

University of Sheffield - Automatic Control & Systems Engineering

The Department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering, University of Sheffield, is pleased to offer a PhD Studentship in Robust Design Optimization.

Funding & Eligibility:

This three-year scholarship is funded through the EPSRC Doctoral Training Grant scheme: Full award: £13,863 p.a. tax-free stipend + tuition fees – available to UK nationals and EU nationals who have been resident in the UK for at least the last three years.

Fees-only award: Tuition fees – available to EU nationals.

This scholarship is available for immediate start and preference will be given to students who can commence studies in 2014.

This research will develop methodological innovations in optimization for robust design. There will be opportunities to gain inspiration from, and validate your ideas within, the exciting Programme for Simulation Innovation (PSi) – funded by EPSRC and Jaguar Land Rover. Possible themes for the research include:

  • Algorithms for many-objective optimization
  • Frameworks for optimization under risk and uncertainty
  • Methods for scheduling high-fidelity and surrogate models within an optimization process
  • Cognitive support for decision-making in complex design optimization environments (e.g. visualization methods for design trade-offs in many-objective optimization problems)
  • Methods for distributed optimization
  • Modelling and analysis of socio-technical engineering design processes.
