PhD studentship in Control and Power Engineering

Imperial College London - Department of Electrical Engineering

EPSRC Centre for Power Electronics

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Convertors in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The Control and Power Group conducts research in many aspects of power electronics, power systems, and control systems.  We are part of the new EPSRC Centre in Power Electronics which includes research in devices, components, converters and drives and have extensive new lab facilities for power electronics.

The PhD in Converters will require research in power electronic circuit analysis and optimisation as part of the EPSRC Centre Converters theme.  Trade-offs in the key quantities of power density, efficiency, cost and reliability will be investigated with focus on a few key case studies, such as wireless power transfer systems.  Understanding and quantifying these trade-offs is key to designing power electronics that meet the design brief.

Applicants should have a first class or good upper second MEng degree or a BEng honours degree with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.  They should have knowledge of modelling, power electronic design, simulation, construction and test; circuit prototyping; knowledge of test and measurement techniques; ability to use Matlab/Simulink and Spice; proven ability to construct power electronic circuits; and proven ability to deliver professional presentations.

The studentship provides a bursary to cover living expenses of £15,863 (Standard EPSRC Bursary rate) (tax free) per annum for up to 3.5 years, together with the College tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Applications from overseas are also welcome but due to funding restrictions the difference in the overseas and UK/EU rate will have to be met by the successful applicant.

For a description of the Control and Power Research Group please visit our website athttp://www3.imperial.ac.uk/controlandpower. Prospective candidates are invited to contact Dr Paul Mitcheson (paul.mitcheson<στο>imperial.ac.uk) for further details.

To apply please send a detailed CV (including the names of two referees) and a covering letter explaining your current interests and relevant background by email to Ms Guler Eroglu (g.eroglu<στο>imperial.ac.uk) quoting the PhD studentship title. Please note that the successful candidate will be asked to submit a PhD research application to the Registry at Imperial College to ensure they have met the College’s admissions criteria.
