An exciting opportunity has become available for a Senior Bioinformatician/Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Zeggini team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The role will involve contributing to a range of analyses identifying and interpreting genetic variation associated with complex traits from genome-wide genotyping and sequencing studies. As well as providing bioinformatics support for on-going projects in the team, which include whole genome sequence data in diverse population cohorts with rich phenotype information and functional genomics data, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop novel computational and statistical approaches to interpret the results of variation studies.

The successful candidate will have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in either biological sciences, statistics, computer science or a related area. Previous experience of the computational analysis of large-scale biological data sets is essential. The candidate must have substantial programming experience, ideally in languages currently used in the team (including Perl, Python, R and C) and be comfortable working in a Unix environment. The candidate must be able to work as a team member and communicate well with external collaborators. S/he will have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prioritise tasks in order to work independently. Essential Skills

• Experience in quantitative science or life sciences as evidenced for example by a undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Computing, Statistics, Genetics);
• Excellent programming skills, both scripting and developing larger programs;
• Attention to detail and ability to work to tight timelines;
• Demonstrable project management and organisational skills;
• Previous experience in working with large-scale datasets;
• Experience in using and integrating information from bioinformatics resources;
• Ability to write and speak English fluently;
• Ability to communicate effectively with collaborators both internally and externally from a range of backgrounds.

Ideal Skills

• Experience working in a high performance computing environment;
• Experience with statistical methods
• Track record in preparing publications and other written materials.

The Sanger Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science.
