Postdoctoral position – Electronic sensor & electrolyte interface study for ultimate ion-sensing

Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication makes Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 41.000 students, 6,500 employees and a turnover of SEK 5,900 million.

The position is for two years starting as soon as possible after the job offer is made.

Background: The research at the Division of Solid State Electronics is focused in two main areas: Electronics for Sustainable Energy and Electronics for Smart Life. Specific research fields include solar cells, flexible electronics, ion-sensors, RF-devices and thin film technologies. The ion-sensor research aims at exploring entirely new silicon nanowire-based device concepts as an electronic sensor for detecting charged particles including DNA/RNA strands at extreme concentrations. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with scientists and engineers in physics, surface chemistry and biochemistry.

Project description: We are now looking for a suitable candidate to strengthen our research on the interface interaction between solid surface and liquid in a charge sensitive transistor intended for specific ion sensing in electrolytes. In order to achieve sensitivity and signal-to-noise performance at levels presently unachieved, we are currently developing an entirely new type of ion sensing device called a NanoWire-based Ion-Gated Bipolar Amplifier (NW-IGBA). However, the interface between the sensing layer and the electrolyte, the sensing layer itself, as well as the stability of the electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor system are all critical parameters. The postdoctoral fellow will be hired for developing: 1) a physical / phenomenological model in order to further our understanding of the dispersion properties of the electrical double layer at this interface; 2) new specific ion-sensing surface layers with the guidance of this model; 3) characterization tools/methods. Expected results from the project are that the model will enable ion-selective sensing with even better sensitivity, signal-to-noise performance and stability.

Qualifications required: To qualify for an employment as a post-doctor, the applicants must hold a PhD degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a PhD. To be eligible for a position as postdoctoral researcher the applicant’s PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date; however, periods of sick leave or parental leave, for example, are deductible from the three-year period.

PhD in Materials research, Physics, or Engineering and experience with ion sensor fabrication and characterization are expected. Previous experience in low-frequency noise measurements is advantageous. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required.

The application should include:

  • Cover letter with a brief description of previous research, research interests, and qualifications.
  • CV and list of publications.
  • Copy of degree diploma, other official academic transcripts.
  • Names of two reference persons, along with their contact details.

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more equal gender balance and female candidates are encouraged to apply.

For further information about the position, please contact associate senior lecturer Zhen Zhang (e-mail zhen.zhang<στο>angstrom.uu.se). Information about the division of Solid State Electronics can be found at www.sse.uu.se.

You are welcome to submit your application no later than December 31st, 2014, UFV‑PA 2014/2167. Use the link below to access the application form.
