Numerical Modeling & Experimental Validation of Therapeutic Focused Ultrasound Applications (PhD)

Description:

The IT’IS Foundation is an independent, non-profit research institute pursuing advanced research in simulation methodologies and applications of physical, physiological, and biological processes to bridge the gap between bench and bedside in the emerging field of personalized medicine.

One of the Foundation’s growing fields of expertise is focused ultrasound (FUS) and the modeling of complex FUS-based treatment scenarios. FUS is a promising non-invasive alternative to interventional therapies. In that context, the IT’IS Foundation has developed a framework for numerical multi-physics modeling of FUS treatments in computational anatomical human models generated from medical image data.

To keep building up our expertise and consolidate our framework, we are seeking a PhD candidate to use the existing simulation platform and perform numerical modeling and experimental validation of clinically relevant FUS applications in collaboration with clinical researchers (e.g., transcranial FUS applied to functional neurosurgery and cerebral oncology, thermal oncology treatments).

Education / Profile:

• MS.c or equivalent degree in physics, medical physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical or communications engineering, or similar field. Knowledge of biology or a biomedical engineering background highly regarded
• Experience with (multi-)physics simulations and numerical analysis
• Experience with experimental setups and conduction of measurements
• Programming experience in, e.g., C/C++ and Python (ideally with knowledge of libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, MatplotLib, VTK)
• Knowledge of medical imaging modalities and hardware for MRI, CT, and sonography a plus
• Knowledge of CAD and scientific visualization software a plus
• Proficiency with the Windows OS and LaTex, working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite advantageous
• Excellent command of the English language; knowledge of German a plus
• Good organizational skills, high motivation, and flexibility
• Excellent ability to work both independently and in a team, including external collaborators
