Research Associate position in Content-oriented Networking : Communications and Information Systems Group (CISG)

As part of our work within the EPSRC-funded COMIT project which is a 3 year project that started in January 2014, the UCL EEE Communications and Information Systems Group invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in Content-oriented Networking.

The COMIT project (Active Content Management at Internet Scale) aims to investigate and develop and communication and information infrastructure for the content-oriented Internet. But unlike other clean-slate Information Centric Networking (ICN) proposals that require radical changes to the underlying Internet infrastructure, COMIT proposes an evolutionary approach through an additional content sub-layer, retaining end-to-end IP-based operation while still exhibiting most of the advantages of clean-slate approaches. The project has been masterminded by UCL based on our renowned expertise in the content-networking area and can possibly revolutionise the future content-oriented Internet. In addition, project will also consider Software-Defined Networking (SDN) approaches to build and implement radical new service-oriented architectures.

We are looking for a talented postdoctoral researcher, ideally with a few years of experience, to join our team and help us fulfil the project’s goals, producing quality research, design and development work and publishing high quality research papers. The successful candidate will work in an established research team within the Communications and Information Systems Group under the guidance of Dr Ioannis Psaras and Prof. George Pavlou. The position is ideal for someone with extensive implementation experience in either the Linux kernel or in virtual networking environments (e.g., MiniNet), as the project involves testbed implementation of the algorithms that we are going to design.

Applicants are required to have a PhD in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or a related field. They also need to have knowledge and/or hands on experience in one or more of the following areas: content-oriented architectures; information-centric networking; software-defined networking; traffic engineering and congestion control; and service-oriented architectures. Algorithm design skills are also desirable and a good publication record in their field of research is also important. The work will involve the design of new models, algorithms and protocols and their implementation and evaluation through network testbed experiments. Research ability and strong system design and programming skills in C/C++ and Java are essential.
The position is initially for 1 year full time starting from January 2015 or earlier, with the possibility of further extension for another two years until the end of 2017.
Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. The post is Grade 7, starting salary £33,353 per annum and maximum salary £40,313 per annum, both including London Allowance which is currently £2,919 per annum.

Interested applicants are encouraged to make Informal enquiries about the post to Dr Ioannis Psaras (i.psaras@ucl.ac.uk) and Prof. George Pavlou (g.pavlou@ucl.ac.uk).
