Postdoctoral position on “Fluid physics in engine cylinder flow with emphasis on PIV measurements of the inflow stroke”

Project description

The project will focus on the intake stroke in a model-engine cylinder of a heavy-duty diesel engine, utilizing time-resolved, stereoscopic (and in a later stage tomographic) particle image velocimetry (PIV) to study the flow inside the cylinder. The first part of the study involves designing a suitable experimental setup that will be able to simulate both a moving piston and moving intake valves and also allow stereoscopic PIV measurements of the flow in the cylinder. The second part will be studies of the flow under various conditions, especially studies of the swirl and tumble motions in the cylinder, using both standard and advanced evaluation techniques, as for example proper orthogonal decomposition (POD).

Qualifications

Applicants should have a recent PhD within experimental fluid mechanics. Practical experience of PIV measurements in complex flows, but also other measurement techniques such as hot-wire anemometry and/or laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) are desirable. Experience of advanced data-analysis methods such as POD is also expected of the successful candidate. Since collaboration with industry will be part of the study a general knowledge and interest in combustion engines is important.

Furthermore, a strong publication record in international journals and conferences is expected.

The candidates should have excellent skills in spoken and written English. Knowledge of Swedish is positive.

Conditions of contract

Form of the employment: Time limited, one year contract with a possibility of extension with one more year. Full time.
