Development and caracterisation of magnetostrictive alloys : application to the development of functional welds

The welding of various steel grades with a filler metal involves a weld with different composition to that of the base and filler metals; on the other hand, magnetic properties of alloys are very sensitive to the chemical composition. Up to now, the magnetic materials used to control the pipes integrity by emitting ultrasonic waves under a magnetic field need to be installed and removed for each test.

The project aims to use the weld between pipes as ultrasonic emitter / receiver under magnetic field; e.g. to develop weldable materials exhibiting good magnetostrictive properties in order to improve ultrasonic testing of steel pipes.

Description

The post-doc researcher will integrate the research group "Solidification" at IJL for one year and will also work in close relation with the research group "Nano-magnestim".
The main objective will be to link alloy chemistry, microstructures, processes and magnetostrictive properties in order to improve the behavior of such materials as functionnal welds.

To reach this objectives, the researcher will use solification experiment that able to control the thermal gradient, the solidification velocity and the growth direction in order to produce microstructure controlled samples for different alloys that will be analysed in terms of texture (electron backscattered diffraction, X-Ray diffraction) and magnetic properties (Magnetometry, with support of the X-Gamma competence center of IJL).
The comparaison to the caraterisations obtained for real welds will help to improve the knowledge on the impact of the process on the magnetostrictive properties.

Three meeting per year with the different participants will be held, and the researcher will have to work and communicate frequently with the different contributors.
