The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. GFZ is currently in the final negotiating stage with the European Commission to launch the project EGSIEM (European Gravity Service for Improved Emergency Management) in response to the Earth Observation Call EO-1-2014 of the Horizon 2020 European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. EGSIEM is a collaborative effort of eight European institutions to establish a scientific service to deliver near-real time and regional gravity products from the GRACE satellite mission for applications in Earth and environmental sciences, including a hydrological and early warning service with gravity-based indicators for extreme hydrological events.

Your Tasks:

  • regional and global-scale hydrological modelling
  • development of gravity-based flood and drought indicators
  • adaptation of calibration and/or data assimilation tools for hydrological models
  • evaluation of gravity-based water storage products for hydrological extremes
  • contributions to user-friendly services, writing scientific publications
  • contribution to writing proposals for third party funding opportunities

Your Qualifications:

  • Master degree in hydrology, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, meteorology, or related field
  • pertinent PhD degree
  • profound expertise in applying and advancing hydrological computer models
  • expertise in statistical data analysis
  • expertise in flood forecasting or data assimilation is an asset
  • capacity for interdisciplinary and international teamwork and excellent communication skills
  • proficiency in spoken and written English, German is an asset

Starting date: 01 January 2015

Fixed term: 3 years

Working hours:full-time (currently 39 h/week) 
The position is, in principle, suitable for part-time employment

Salary:EG 13 TVöD-Bund (Ost)
