Job tasks
In this position, your main tasks are:
- Provide bioinformatics support for scientific projects on a collaborative basis;
- Train life scientists in efficient usage of computational biology and bioinformatics methods as part of their research;
- Organize post-graduate practical training courses in computational biology and bioinformatics;
- Contribute to the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics training and outreach activities.
Profile requirements
We are seeking for candidates with a creative, proactive and collaborative disposition of mind for this service-oriented position. Our ideal candidate has:
- Educational background in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or comparable skills;
- In depth understanding of molecular biology and biochemistry;
- Practical research experience (PhD or equivalent) in relevant areas of life-science;
- Good overview of state-of-the art software tools in Bioinformatics and computational biology: in depth knowledge of protein bioinformatics (sequence, structure, function) is required, experience with other bioinformatics techniques (e.g. NGS data analysis) is a plus;
- Experience in scripting (Python, PERL, R, etc.) and/or programming (C/C++);
- Excellent communication skills in English (both spoken and written); knowledge of German is a plus;
- Enthusiasm for teaching and training; eagerness to continuously learn new techniques and readiness to prepare corresponding training concepts; experience with modern e-learning tools would be a plus;
- Ability and interest to understand scientific questions with complex dependencies; flexibility to handle multiple projects in parallel and adjust to changing priorities;
- Outstanding organizational skills (project management and self-organization).
