PhD Studentship in Architecture

PhD Studentship in Architecture

Plants & Architecture: Nature inspired design and biomaterials. Sêr Cymru National Research Network funded PhD studentship at the Welsh School of Architecture. Project title: Plants & Architecture: Nature inspired design and biomaterials. Historically plants have been used as renewable raw materials in buildings, a source of design inspiration, and grown in cities to improve air quality, human health and well-being. The project seeks to revisit the relationship between plants and architecture including through biomimicry which is a contemporary philosophy in architecture that seeks solutions for sustainability in nature. Through this approach we seek to improve the overall sustainability of buildings and plants as well as making our future buildings and cities smarter and greener. More than 50% of the global population now lives in towns and cities and it is predicted that by the middle of this century 70% of the world’s population will do so. In future cities we will need to consider how plants can grow and how some crop production can occur within the urban environment. This will be important in the expanding number of mega-cities but also in the retrofitting of pre-existing buildings. Our project will use knowledge of how plants work to achieve more sustainable buildings, and we will use plants as a source of low carbon materials to improve sustainability, improve in-door air quality and to store carbon. We are looking for a talented and motivated student to take on an interdisciplinary challenge by using nature inspired design and through the use of plant derived (bio) materials to improve building performance and to reduce the carbon footprint of building.
