PostDoc/Researcher in Exascale Computing at HPCViz/PDC

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, KTH Computer Science and Communication

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 12,400 full year students at first and second levels, almost 1,900 active (at least 50 per cent) research students and 5,100 employees.

Department information

The position is placed at the department for High Performance Computing and Visualization (HPCViz) and PDC – Center for High Performance Computing. For more information go tohttps://www.kth.se/en/csc/forskning/hpcviz and https://www.pdc.kth.se/.

The Department of High Performance Computing and Visualization focuses on developing new concepts for improved usage of high performance computer systems, including algorithms, programming environments, tools, and the analysis and synthesis of visual data. The department also has strong links with the PDC – Center for High Performance Computing that operates national supercomputing resources, including the currently largest supercomputer in the Nordics, Beskow, a 2 PFLOPS Cray XC-40 system with over 53,000 cores. The department takes part in high profile EC projects in the field of High Performance Computing, is coordinating the “EPiGRAM” project, and has a focus on programming models, runtime systems, and performance tools for exascale computing.

Job description

In the recent FET-HPC call under Horizon 2020 a number of exascale computing projects were funded and the successful candidate is expected to join the ExaFLOW project, a collaboration of major European CFD (from Sweden, UK, Germany and Switzerland) and HPC centres (from Sweden, Germany, and UK) that aims at designing, implementing, and testing novel CFD methods with the potential to reach the exascale. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the efficient implementation of novel algorithms, e.g. in the area of adaptivity, and also to assume a managerial role in the project. The implementations will be based on the NEK5000 code in collaboration with the KTH Mechanics Department.

Qualifications

Candidates need to have an academic education (preferably PhD) in computer science, computational science, or related fields and proven experiences in implementing, analysing, and optimising scientific applications on large-scale HPC systems. Good knowledge of parallel programming environments (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenACC, etc.) is required and experiences with Fortran and spectral element methods are a plus.
