Senior Agronomist - Soil Science

JOB DESCRIPTION

Main Goal

Digital Agriculture is an exciting and challenging suite of activities related to farming that includes Precision Agriculture, Prescription Agriculture, and depends on the collection, use, analysis, and interpretation of data from multiple sources with the goal of optimizing productivity, profitability, and sustainability of farming operations.

We are seeking bright and enthusiastic experts to put together a creative team that will build and deliver Limagrain's Digital Agriculture solution, mixing agronomic expertise, advanced data science algorithms, cloud and mobile computing to provide innovative solutions to farmers .

Activities

You will be focused on building predictive models of crop growth taking into account environmental data and in particular the influence of varying soil structure and type on nutrient and water intake efficiency. This will involve the application of mathematical and computer models, working with experimental and simulated data as well as theory in order to provide recommendations that will help farmers to better manage risks and take more informed decisions.

  • Collection, organization, analysis and interpretation of large agronomic datasets coming from a multiplicity of sources (internal and external), including sensors, airborne imaging, soil and weather data.
  • Use theory, simulation, and experimental data collected from extensive field testing to lead the development of new or adaptation of existing methods and algorithms for modeling crop x soil interaction and building predictive crop development models.
  • Apply advanced soil modeling to better understand dynamics of key soil properties like hydrology, temperature, and nutrients.
  • Participate to the implementation of these models into ready to use software routines in accordance with overall system architecture.
  • Take part in the development and implementation of novel large-scale crop and environmental data collection methods.
  • Keep informed of scientific developments for modeling crop x soil interaction (participation to scientific conferences, bibliographical follow-up) and evaluate their interest for our Digital Agriculture activities.

The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate and collaborate closely with research, development, and marketing teams across the seed business organization worldwide as well as with external partners.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Profile

  • PhD or Master's Degree with significant relevant experience in agronomy, soil science, plant science, or a related quantitative field is required.
  • Deep theoretical and practical understanding of soil science and agronomy, knowledge of principles and practices of crop, soil, water and nutrient management, and their interaction with weather and climate.
  • Five to ten years' experience in applied agronomic research, and in particular in modeling the nutrient and/or water cycle in crop production systems.
  • Experience in using advanced computer-based crop growth simulation models (APSIM, DSSAT …).
  • Familiarity with soil sampling and analyses methods.
  • Good command of scientific data analysis software (R, Matlab, Python or similar) and proven ability of applying it in analysis of complex datasets to solve problems.
  • Ability to take research projects from conception to completion, including: problem analysis; conducting necessary experiments and/or computer simulations; data collection, analysis and interpretation; delivering actionable conclusions and recommendations.
  • Proven ability to work in dynamic multidisciplinary teams
  • High analytical skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work autonomously and independently in an entrepreneurial way.
  • Given the international scope of the activity fluent English is mandatory. This position involves some travel.
